Emphasis on timing and quality has enabled Bergen’s Appliance Repairs & Spares to set itself apart in an industry that often has customers pulling their hair out in frustration.
The franchise was created in 1999; the company was started with the express purpose of bridging the gap between the service expected and the service delivered in the industry. “People are used to the so-called bakkie operators and back yard mechanics. I realized that there was a need for a brand other than what was available in the market at that stage”, says Adriaan van Bergen, franchisor of Bergen’s.
The average household owns an average of 10 large non audio-visual appliances known as white appliances; these includes washing machines, dish washers, tumble driers, microwaves, fridges, freezers, vacuums, stove hob, extractors & ovens. There are also other appliances we repair such as ice makers, water dispensers/coolers and bar fridges. Bergen’s Appliance Repairs repair all makes/brands of appliances and are not restricted to a specific manufacturer. Audio-visual repairs are known as black appliances in the South African market and are not part of the work that Bergen's Port Elizabeth do.
Bergen’s uses drivers and carriers to collect appliances. This allows technicians more time to focus solely on appliance repairs in a workshop environment. The first option is to collect the larger appliances such as washing machine, tumble driers, fridges and dish washers then evaluate them in the workshop environment and submit a quote, if this quote is not excepted the relevant unit is returned free of charge, this applies to all work in a 5km radius from the relevant branch. The second option is for a call out to be scheduled; in this case the technician is allocated and time slot is scheduled and a call out charge is invoiced at current rate of R660.00 excl. VAT, This once again applies to all work done in a 5km radius.
Any work outside the 5km radius has an additional charged for transportation based on the AA rates for the vehicle used multiply by km travelled.
Bergen’s currently consists of 26 branches Nationwide. The secret to the Bergen’s success is community-based work. “We focus on work within communities and we are efficient because we do not service areas that are too large. In the West Rand, for instance, there are six branches”.
